How to Remove a Car Battery

Auto Mechanic Replacing Car Battery

Your vehicle’s car battery serves as the powerhouse that keeps your vehicle working as it should. The battery not only provides the required electrical energy to start up your car, but it also plays a role in the functioning of door locks, your radio, car lights, and more. Are your headlights causing you trouble with seeing properly when driving on Jesup roads at night? Dim car lights are usually an indicator that your vehicle’s car battery is running low on juice. For the DIYers looking to replace their car battery yourself, the service team at I-95 Toyota of Brunswick has the following helpful guide on how to remove a car battery from your vehicle safely, so read on to learn the ropes of taking out a car battery!

What to Know Before Taking Out a Car Battery

Before you try taking out a car battery, there are some things you need to know to ensure your own safety. If you weren’t already aware, a car battery can seriously injure you via electrocution due to their high amperage. You should never touch a car battery without having insulated work gloves on. Wearing safety goggles to protect your eyes from corrosive battery chemicals is also important. And of course, please turn off your vehicle before trying to remove a car battery. Otherwise, your car could potentially explode (big yikes).

Some other essential advice you should take into account before removing a car battery include:

  • Secure the battery cables in their proper place using zip ties. If the cables touch, they can ignite sparks, which can in turn result into an explosion
  • Once you remove the positive battery cable, cover it with a cloth to avoid the risk of metal-to-metal contact.
  • Remove any jewelry, such as washes, piercings, bracelets, necklaces to avoid getting electrocuted.
  • Ensure that you’re in a well-ventilated area to protect yourself from any outgassing that results from the flammable and dangerous liquid compounds used in your car battery.

Removing a a Car Battery: Step-By-Step

Once you’ve taken the steps to prepare and protect yourself before removing a car battery, you’re good to go. The steps on how to remove a car battery are as follows:

  1. Make sure your car is off and you’re in the proper PPE (we covered this).
  2. Locate the negative battery terminal. This should have a black plastic cover and/or a minus sign.
  3. Find the bolt head of the negative terminal and using a wrench or pliers, hold it steady.
  4. Take another set of pliers or wrench to remove the nut.
  5. Pull off the negative cable and place it safely away from the battery. Wrap in a cloth.
  6. Repeat the above steps for the positive cable, (again making sure that the battery cables DO NOT touch).
  7. If the battery is held by a securing bracket, remove the screws and bolts holding it in place by using your pliers or wrench
  8. Lift the battery straight out of the bracket. This can be heavy.
